Hi guys so I’m in the middle of writing my dissertation, which is scary and in order to procrastinate from writing, said dissertation. I thought I would make a video telling you some tips and tricks. I picked up along the way of how to write a dissertation, and this can be applied to any sort of assignment really. So I hope you find this useful. My first tip is, if you have control over the topic, make sure it’s an interesting one, because you are going to be spending a lot of time researching this and writing about it.
So I’m writing my dissertation on why people don’t do yoga because yoga’s my hobby, so I might as well make it my work as well, and I have found this really interesting. I haven’t completely got sick of it. Yet my boyfriend Adam wrote his dissertation last year on animal law and by the end of it he absolutely hated that area of law so try and make sure it’s an interesting topic if you do have a choice on it. Nextly, when you come to writing your dissertation, you’ll be staring at this blank Word document the ages, just thinking how how do I even start this, so my advice is to structure it first. So, like bullet point, what you want each paragraph to say and then pad it out a bit more and then you’ll make sure you’re not going off track. You’Re, not rambling and you’ve, put in enough content into the areas that you need to talk about.
Nextly try and get into a routine with writing it. I’M not the best at this, because I will do like three days where I’m going into uni early and writing all day and then I’m getting loads done and then the rest of the week. I will just not write anything so getting into a routine is really important. Just to make sure you get it done on time, so as important as getting into a routine is making sure that you’re getting enough sleep because you’re not going to write decent words if you’re half asleep, although you might be at your most productive in the evening, All nighters are not the way forward, they’re unhealthy and you don’t make the most of your brain capacity when you’re half asleep so try and get the majority of your stuff done during the day. And then, if you are getting close to your deadline and do need to do a bit more then yeah, maybe you could get into the evening hours, but while you’ve still got plenty of time, make sure getting enough sleep so that your writing good quality words nextly Snacking is okay when you’re writing a huge piece of work. You’Re gon na want to snack.
So now is not the time to be on a diet. You want to have the chocolate you want to have the biscuits and crisps and that’s all right, because you need some brain fuel to keep you going. My dissertation snack has been mini eggs. I am obsessed with them they’re a pound and tesco at the moment. So I literally stock up on mini eggs and I’ll go through like two packets a day make sure you back it up. Save a copy on your USB save a copy on your laptop, save a copy on your uni computers, send a copy to your mum and sure you can save a copy to just make sure you back it up, because it’d be the worst thing ever if you’ve Written that many words and you put so much time and effort into it if it went missing or got corrupted or something so make sure you back it up, make sure you know how to format it, because a lot of courses have different specifications of how they Want you to format it like?
We have to have it in a certain font at a certain size, with a certain line spacing so make sure you know this before you submit it and if you’ve not heard anything about how to format it, I check just to make sure there’s not some specific Rules so you’ve written it all out. It’S perfectly structured you’ve got plenty of sleep. You’Ve got into your routine. You formatted, it correctly now get someone else to read it because you might read through it and not notice any of your mistakes and think that it’s brilliant, but as soon as a fresh pair of eyes, see it, they will notice all the grammatical errors. All the spelling mistakes, all of the sentences that are really long and don’t make sense, so ask someone else, really nicely to proofread it, and then you can share your snacks with them. Now i need to get my dissertation bound properly, so it’s like an actual book.
So my advice is to get it finished early, so you can get it bound early because a lot of places will have cues and if lots of people have their deadlines around the same time that you will be longer. So you want to make sure you’ve got plenty of time for it to get bound and then put you hand in and finally, you’ve been putting all this work into researching and writing. You’Ve got to give yourself something to look forward to at the end.
Like me and Adam have just booked a holiday to Barcelona and I’m so excited, so that is my motivation for keeping writing. So that is my 10 tips. Writing your dissertation. I hope you found these useful and now I’m going to take my own advice and get back to writing
