Closings, Delays, eLearning Days in the Midlands due to expected heavy rainfall - ABC Columbia (2024)

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– As South Carolina learns about the possible impact of Tropical Storm Debby as it hit Florida as a Hurricane Category 1, some school districts are turning to eLearning Days.

Also, districts are rescheduling in-person school hours due to the possible heavy rainfall and flooding.

Orangeburg County School District:

Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) officials have announced eLearning Days for Thursday, Aug. 8, due to inclement weather.

All afterschool programs and athletic events, including practices and games, are canceled until schools resume their normal schedule or until further notice, said officials.

Bamberg County School District:

Bamberg County School District has announced that due to severe weather conditions expected to hit the area on Monday night, Aug. 5, and Tuesday, Aug. 6, all schools in the district will be closed on Tuesday.

Also, all afterschool activities are cancelled. Any parents with questions are asked to contact their child’s school.

District officials say they are still making a decision about Wednesday and the rest of the week.

Sumter County School District:

Due to the high probability of tropical force winds, heavy rain, and severe flooding from Tropical Storm Debby Sumter County School District is moving to eLearning Days for all students and staff.

Tuesday, August 6, and Wednesday, August 7, will now be eLearning Days for the district due to safety being the districts top priority.

Also, Thursday, August 8 will be an eLearning day for all students and staff.

Lexington School District Four:

Lexington Four will not begin school as planned on Tuesday, Aug. 6, said the district.

The rescheduling is due to the possibility of significant rainfall throughout the district with a high likelihood of flooding in low lying areas which may make roads hazardous, say officials.

All other activities are also canceled for Tuesday. But the district says schools will go back to regular schedule on Wednesday, August 7.

As of Wednesday, Aug. 7, the district has decided to move Thursday’s school day to an eLearning Day for later in the year. All schools and activities in the district is cancelled Thursday.

Richland School District Two:

The school district has announced that Step Up To Sixth and Fresh Start is canceled on Tuesday, August 6. On Wednesday, Aug. 7, schools will be on an 1 hour delay.

There will be no school on Thursday, Aug. 8.

Lee County School District:

Lee County schools are dismissing early on Tuesday, Aug. 6, due to possible inclement weather conditions, and all school activities is canceled for the next couple of days.

Elementary schools will release at 1:30 p.m., middle and high schools release at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, and Thursday, Aug. 8, will be eLearning Days for all students.

Calhoun County School District:

Schools in Calhoun County have switched to eLearning for Tuesday through Wednesday, August 6 – 7th due to possible weather conditions this week.

Due to the anticipated effects of the remnants of Hurricane Debby, Thursday, August 8, 2024 will be an eLearning day.

Lexington School District Two:

Lexington Two is planning to open on a normal school day schedule on Wednesday, August 7. All after-school activities will go on as scheduled Wednesday afternoon also.

The school district is continuing to monitor the weather for Wednesday and Thursday.

All Lexington Two after-school activities and programs, including athletics, and classes are canceled on Thursday, Aug. 8, due to inclement weather.

Lexington School District One:

Due to the forecast for possible weather conditions from Tropical Storm Debby on Thursday all Lexington One schools and offices will be closed August 8. All afterschool activities and sports are also canceled.

Lexington School District Three:

Lexington County School District Three announces that Thursday, August 8, will be an eLearning Day for all students and staff in the district due to the possible impacts of Tropical Storm Debby.

Richland County School District One:

Due to the forecast for heavy rain, flooding and gusty winds from Tropical Storm Debby, all Richland One schools and administrative offices will be closed Thursday, August 8, said district officials.

Also, all afterschool activities and events that were scheduled for Thursday also have been canceled.

On Friday, Aug. 9, schools will operate under a two-hour delay start rather than the normal schools start times.

With the two-hour delay, the adjusted school start times are: 9:30 a.m. (elementary schools); 10:45 a.m. (middle schools); and 10 a.m. (high schools).

Students who ride the bus to school should report to their bus stops two hours later than normal Friday.

School District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties:

School District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties schools and offices, including the FIVE virtual program, will be closed on Thursday, August 8, due to inclement weather.

All after school extracurricular activities are canceled, also.

Friday, August 9, will be the first day of school, and will be a “B” day.

Kershaw County School District:

All schools in the district will shift to eLearning on Thursday, Aug. 8, due to the forecast of heavy rain and potential flash flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.

All after-school activities and sports are also canceled for Thursday. Teachers will post assignments in Canvas (or will provide paper packets), and will be working remotely on Thursday.

Also, teachers will be available for student questions during their virtual office hours: Elementary Schools: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., Middle and High Schools: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

School District of Newberry County:

According to the district, the School District of Newberry County will operate on a regular schedule on Thursday, August 8.

Fairfield County School District:

Due to the potential impact of Tropical Storm Debby,Fairfield County School District will operate on an eLearning schedule for Thursday, August 8.

Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College:

Due to the extreme rainfall expected this week Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College says it will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, August 6 – 7th.

Columbia College:

Columbia College will be closed on Thursday, August 8, according to the college.

Claflin University:

Claflin University will close for the next two days, August 6 through the 7th due to inclement weather. All campus events and activities have been postponed.

Midlands Technical College:

According to officials, the college will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 8.

City of West Columbia:

All city parks will be closed beginning on Tuesday, August 6, due to inclement weather, according to a post from the West Columbia Police Department.

SC State Museum:

Due to inclement weather, the South Carolina State Museum will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 8, to ensure the safety of campers, visitors, and staff, said museum officials.

City of Orangeburg:

The City of Orangeburg is preparing for possible inclement weather this week by closing administrative offices on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and Wednesday, Aug. 7.

The city council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m. in council chambers.

An emergency shelter will be open for residents at the City Gym, located at 410 Broughton Street beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, through Friday, Aug. 9.

Sanitation services will run as normal on Tuesday.

Orangeburg County:

Orangeburg County will be closed on Tuesday, August 6, and Wednesday, August 7, due to inclement weather.

Columbia Parks and Recreation Department:

Parks and Recreation has announced that outdoor pools at Greenview Park and Maxcy Gregg Park will be closed today on Monday, Aug. 5, through Thursday,August 8 2024, due to impending inclement weather.

Family Health Centers:

Family Health Centers will be closed on Tuesday, and Wednesday, Aug. 6, through Aug. 7, due to the possible impact of Debby.

Bamberg County Offices:

Bamberg County offices will be close early on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. and remain close on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Sandbags are available for residents at the Bamberg County Emergency Services, 2893 Main Highway.

Richland Library:

Due to impending inclement weather conditions, Richland Library will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 8, at all locations.

Tandem Health (Sumter):

Due to potential bad weather, all Tandem Health sites in Sumter County will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 8.

Clear Dot Charter School:

Clear Dot Charter School is will be closed and have virtual learning on Thursday, Aug. 8. Also, after school activities are cancelled.

City of Cayce:

Due to the inclement weather from Tropical Storm Debby, Cayce City Hall will be closed on Thursday, August 8. Cayce Municipal Court will also be closed on Thursday, August 8.Cayce sanitation routes that normally run on Thursday mornings will now be picked up on Friday, August 9. Residents are asked to put your roll carts out on Friday morning before 7:30 a.m. and do not leave them out overnight on Thursday night.

Richland County Government Offices:

Richland County Government Offices are closed to the public Thursday, Aug. 8 amid the possible impacts of Tropical Storm Debby.
